Two Japanese scientists have confirmed what has long been know to many South Africans: the Karoo is one of the most quiet places on Earth.

It is indeed so silent that with the aid of ultra-sensitive sound equipment one can hear the "scratching" of the atmosphere against the ground.

Kobhachi and Nichida made this discovery in their study of the vibrations in the Earth's crust with information gathered from thirteen locations all over the world. They regarded Sutherland as one of the most silent places on Earth and said that the nano movements which they were looking for, were the most available here.
